Some people found the tools really pretty usable, so for them it was great for drawing a quick sketch and sharing with people, but it was always a bit clunky compared to physical pens. We never found a workflow that fully replaced taking turns drawing on a (shared) whiteboard. Certainly among the smaller businesses I tend to work with, I could imagine any remote conferencing tool that got that right first would rapidly expand its market share. I suspect there’s a significant opportunity here, a chance to fix one of the legitimate criticisms of WFH. Extra points if they can effectively use tablets (thinking Wacom not iPad here) so everyone can just sketch out ideas quickly and collaboratively again, and if it also provides useful and rapidly accessible tools for things like saving interesting work, editing and moving things around, and retrieving something you were looking at earlier in the discussion. I hope the next generation of conferencing apps will provide shared “whiteboard” spaces as standard. The practical utility of just having a huge whiteboard on the wall that everyone can see with a bunch of different coloured pens that anyone can pick up is enormous. I’m a big fan of remote working in general but with current tools we’ve definitely lost something in this area. Drawing diagrams takes for-fricken-ever so people tend not to do it in meetings. This doesn’t happen (IME) with remote work. One thing I miss about in-office work is that people would spontaneously draw diagrams in meetings. When somebody starts making changes to a diagram in a remote meeting, it’s a sign you’re going to be there for a long, long time. It really lacks the collaborative value of someone walking up to the whiteboard and saying “what if we did this,” not hesitating to make changes because they can do it in ten seconds and then wipe out their changes and redraw the original in few seconds if they want. Best case, someone shows up with a diagram, and it stays up while people talk about different ways of doing it, and after the meeting someone makes the changes that were suggested. It was like a tribe singing the same songs over and over again, trying out variations and evolving the “official” version over time. And everybody did it, so everybody was rehearsing the architecture in their heads and had a basic grasp of it. The same diagrams would get drawn over and over again, evolving. For this reason I love drawing diagrams on whiteboards and absolutely hate taking the step of putting them into a wiki/README/etc.

The Americas and Africa are tilted inward and pushed to the upper corners of the map, while Australia sits perfectly upright at the bottom center. Seen in rectangular form, Antarctica is intact and at the bottom right. AuthaGraphĬalled the AuthaGraph, the result is a world map that looks a little different than most of us are used to. Their website states that the goal was to create a map better suited to address the problems of the 21st century, including rapidly diminishing sea ice and territorial claims of marine territory, by more accurately depicting what areas near the poles actually look like. The multi-step process preserves the true dimensions of the continents by angling them outward instead of stretching them, maintaining the illusion that they’re all laid out vertically like we’re used to. Hajime Narukawa, a Tokyo-based architect and artist, broke the globe up into 96 regions and folded it into a tetrahedron and then a pyramid before finally flattening it into a two-dimensional sheet. The 2016 winner of Japan’s prestigious Good Design, designers figured out how to translate our spherical world into a rectangular box. We may finally have a faithful flat map, however. What Is the Most Accurate Map of the World? Areas near both the equator and prime meridian are accurate, but the distortion gets worse the further you go from either.Īrmadillo Projection (Credit: Daniel R. It succeeds in presenting a more accurate view of the poles, but at the cost of misshapen continents and bent meridians. This map bowed out the equator in an attempt to replicate the topography of a sphere and avoid stretching out areas far from the equator. Here are a few of the different ways cartographers have tried to depict the Earth. By calculating how much each circle deforms, it is possible to determine how much the map is pulling and stretching the continents out of shape at that point. Called Tissot’s indicatrix, the equation takes the form of circles placed at regular intervals across a map. The problem was so widespread that a French mathematician even developed an eponymous equation to quantify the degree of distortion that a world map experienced. Some were made for specific purposes, while others just tried to find the cartographic sweet spot. Maps are compromises between distorting the angles of latitude and longitude lines and the relative areas of the continents and oceans. Why is an Accurate World Map Hard to Come By?įor centuries, cartographers have made numerous attempts to account for the inconsistency while trying to recreate the most accurate map of the Earth. But the AuthaGraph may be the pinnacle of accuracy. That’s the difficulty with stretching a sphere to fit a rectangle, and for centuries cartographers have struggled to balance maintaining straight latitudinal lines with the preservation of perspective. In reality though, Africa is larger than all of North America, and the Antarctic is about as big as Australia. That we used for computing various approximations in the Algebraic Approximations section. If plotting with a logarithmic scale on the y-axis is powerful, then plotting with a logarithmic scale on both the x-axis and y-axis is really powerful. Now, while it’s not smooth or consistent or risk free, you’d see that in fact the general trend of growth (in a %/year growth sense) has been present for many decades. Now, click “Edit Graph”, click “Format”, and check the box next to “Log Scale” if the horizontal scale resets you may have to click “Max” again. The linear graph looks absolutely tiny for the first half of the dataset. To see for yourself, load this data, click “Max” to set the maximum timescale from 1970 onwards. This reflects the idea that in general, in any given year, the company’s profit (whether retained earnings or distributed as dividends) will be roughly a few percent of its current value. If we plot with a logarithmic scale, it reveals that in fact an investor at roughly any point has roughly doubled their investment value in about a decade. (It should also be plotted with dividends reinvested to show total returns, though this is a separate issue we can’t address here.) Why logarithmic? Because if we plot with a linear scale, it looks like all the growth has happened in just the last few years. The logarithm has transformed an exponential (with base 1.05) into a straight line.įor a similar example, plotting the value of a stock or mutual fund should be done on a semi-log plot. It turns out that these two examples are actually referring to the same thing: Saying “minus 6 dB per octave” might mean that the output signal at 200 Hz is only 1 2 For example 100 Hz and 200 Hz are one octave apart. Saying “minus 20 dB per decade” might mean that the output signal at 1000 Hz is only 1 10Īs large in voltage amplitude as the signal at 100 Hz.Īn octave is a 2X increase in frequency, just as it is in music. In future sections when we talk about frequency response of amplifiers and filters, we will sometimes consider numbers like “-20 dB/decade” or “-6 dB/octave”.Ī decade is a 10X increase in frequency, for example from 100 Hz to 1000 Hz. , then “-60 dBV” is simply a short way of saying “1 millivolt.”īe careful to track whether a decibel unit is relative or absolute, and whether the absolute reference represents a power or voltage level. In another example, “dBV” means “decibels relative to 1 Volt.” Therefore, -60 dBv represents “-60dB relative to 1 volt.” As -60 dB in voltage is a voltage factor of 10 − 3 However, it is often convenient to define the denominator as a specific unit-bearing quantity.įor example, “dBm” means “decibels relative to 1 milliwatt.” Therefore, +20 dBm represents “+20dB relative to 1 milliwatt.” As Watts are a unit of power, and +20 dB is a multiplication of 100X in power, then “+20 dBm” is simply a short way of saying “100 milliwatts.” We can add the decibel values to get +40dB overall voltage gain – a factor of 10 2Īny unit specified only as “dB” refers only to a relative factor between signals. If we connected two amplifiers together in series, each of which had 10x voltage gain, then each would contribute +20dB gain. That’s why engineers speak colloquially about +3 dB or +6 dB to refer to a power gain of 2 or a voltage gain of 2, respectively. These exact decibel values for multiplication by 2Īre commonly truncated. The sum of all this knowledge goes into the tunes that we deliver electronically. We also partner with race teams and shops throughout the world who put our calibrations through real world testing under grueling conditions. These same maps are also validated on the street and track, and we invest heavily in R&D by purchasing, modifying, and racing many of the vehicles we tune. While no two cars are identical, the base maps we develop on the dyno are generally very close to optimal. While we do have dyno services available locally (as well as street tuning) we are able to utilize on board diagnostic data in conjunction with our dyno-developed base maps to create a calibration that is ideal for your unique setup. The majority of our tuning is done remotely. This allows us to spend more time devoted to customer care and utilize our tuning skills with less overhead. Xero Limit focuses less on installations and more on tuning and parts. In 2017 we took a break, and in 2018 Xero Limit was formed. Over the years we became very well known in the Subaru and Mazda communities as the go-to tuner for not just standard setups, but the more difficult ones that had left other tuners scratching their heads. In 2009 we partnered with EcuTek in the UK, this let us spend much more time tuning and much less time analyzing code. These cars lit the fire for many of the aftermarket companies and shops in existence today. If you know what an AFC, SAFC, VPC, EVC-EZ, DSMLink represent then you were a member of a select club of (usually broke) car enthusiasts. Back then we went through several versions of the car, most ending with a broken transmission as typical for a DSM owner. Tuning has been a passion of ours dating back to the late 90's when we built and raced DSMs on the local drag strips in New Jersey. Like Jupiter, Saturn resembles another recognizable character – this time, it’s an “h.” However, this symbol is actually supposed to represent Saturn’s scythe or sickle, because Saturn is named after the Roman god of agriculture. And last, but not least, there is the addition of the swirled line which is believed to represent a lighting bolt – which just happens to Jupiter’s (and Zeus’) weapon of choice. The line through the symbol is consistent with this, since it would indicate that it was an abbreviation for Zeus’ name. Additionally, the symbol can stand for a “Z,” which is the first letter of Zeus – who was Jupiter’s Greek counterpart. It has been said to represent an eagle, which is Jupiter’s bird. Jupiter’s sign, which looks like an ornate, oddly shaped “four,” also stands for a number of symbols. Additionally, it is the same sign as the one used to represent “male”, and hence is associated with self-assertion, aggression, sexuality, energy, strength, ambition and impulsiveness. For this reason, the symbol associated with Mars represents the god of wars’ shield and spear. Mars is named after the Roman god of war, owing perhaps to the planet’s reddish hue, which gives it the color of blood. Mars, as photographed with the Mars Global Surveyor, is identified with the Roman god of war. In fact, perhaps owing to the simplicity of the design, cross-shaped incisions have made appearances as petroglyphs in European cult caves dating all the way back to the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic, and throughout prehistory to the Iron Age. These include, but are not limited to, Norse mythology (where it appears as the Solar or Odin’s Cross), Native American cultures (where it typically represented the four spirits of direction and the four sacred elements), the Celtic Cross, the Greek Cross, and the Egyptian Ankh. This symbol is not just limited to Christianity though, and has been used in various culture around the world. It has also been interpreted as the Globus Cruciger, an old Christian symbol for Christ’s reign on Earth. The most popular view is that the circle with a cross in the middle represents the four main compass points. The symbol is also the chemical sign for copper since copper was used to make mirrors in ancient times.Įarth’s sign also has a variety of meanings, although it does not refer to a mythological god. This representation of femininity makes sense considering Venus was the goddess of love and beauty. Not only is it the sign for “female”, but it also represents the goddess Venus’ hand mirror. Installing the retention plate and sending it home was also a minor pain.īut now I have a working lock assembly the can't be opened with any key or flat blade screwdriver. I sorted out the spring, put the cylinder in, rotated it, then used an angled pick to get the spring fiddled into the hole. Hence trying to put it together without the plate. The retaining plate looks like it should be able to be installed before putting the cylinder in, compressed and then spring into latched with the cylinder installed. The retaining plate spring got bent on reassembly to the housing, that should be put into place AFTER the cylinder goes back into the latch housing. Took several tried to get that back together, working, and recrimped. I had popped off the cover, so I used the Thule sliding plate and spring to repair that. It isn’t a “Bargman” cylinder and it’s for some completely different application altogether.Īlright success! So I used the original cylinder housing but used the lock plates and the keys from the Slide-Co 152179 Patio Lock Cylinder. If it fits, I will post up the info of what it is for. I think I found a replacement lock cylinder. I think I could even have left the clip and spring in, and just pulled the pin. Next issue, super bad lock cylinder… After completely disassembling the lock I figured out to pull the cylinder out I only need to remove a clip, a spring, and the rotation pin. Mine was actually frozen and it was while trying to get it all apart that I unstuck it. And discovered that the deadbolt pin can be unscrewed from the locked position. So I pulled everything apart and poked at it more. If I pull it out in the vertical position after it is locked, I can push and pull the deadbolt pin inside.īut this bothered me that the key, or a screwdriver, could disable the ability to unlock it from inside. I can actually pull it out basically in any position, but let’s leave that alone for a moment now lol. But I was pulling the key out in the horizontal position. Okay not sure if this is how the lock is “supposed” to work…. So far most of the outside dimensions I am finding on normal replacement locks are just slightly smaller than the Bargman cutout…. The standard opening is something like 3 3/4” tall by 2 3/4” wide. Maybe I will pull it out completely and fiddle with it on the bench.ĮDIT: The 元00 cutout is 4 1/2” tall by 4 3/4” wide. In fact I am gonna go back out real quick and see if I can figure out the non-working deadbolt or inside locking issue out. I took mine apart to measure the cutout, and it doesn’t look too rough inside. Replacing just the lock cylinder would be ideal. I have found one full replacement, a Bauer Motorhome Entry Door Lock, BP12RV but at $139 I would rather ghetto it slightly I think with the filler plates and get a power remote latch. If need be, I can rivet two aluminum filler plates to the inside and outside, but I would prefer a simpler/cleaner solution. Plus for some reason mine doesn’t lock from the inside (or it is smarter than me, likely story…). A flat blade would probably work better than the actual key. But I can open it with any key that even “sorta” fits in the hole. But surprise surprise folks our locks Bargman 元00 are stupid expensive at $300 plus (if you can find one) and of COURSE are a larger cutout than ever other silly RV door lock on the market. Seriously, this was supposed to be an EASY ONE. So I'm waiting it out and hoping it will get better in time and I can tolerate citruses again. It took a week of sleepy benadryl coma to clear it. But I kept drinking lemon tea and eating tons of citrus fruits for more than a week since I still felt sick and eventually got hives :(. I guess the body is focused on fighting a virus and just don't care that much? Idk. I recently got a really bad flu/cold, coughing for months and I usually drink a lot of lemon tea when I'm sick for like a week or so and somehow my body is ok with it until I recover from flu. Today is my itchy body day too□, so annoying! I guess everyone is different? I've lived with this symptom for a long time and it didn't get any worse until this year when I stopped listening to my body. Probably other people have more experience and knowledge about Benadryl, I'm not sure about that, I just wanted to share and support showing you're not alone. Apparently a lot of people struggle with their weird body responses too, now I can put a name to it. I get it, sorry I can't help more, I just recently started looking into mcas, before I thought it's just my weird body acting up in a weird way. I've only been taking half a day for a little bit but i swear i'm already having sleep issues but if i don't take it i itch so bad i feel like taking myself to the ER Im also wondering what my options for relief are because i've heard that you can 1) develop benadryl dependency 2) it can back fire and cause even worse histamine responses and 3) it can just stop working over time It may have happened a few years ago but i can't even remember at this point, my memory is all jacked up because of covid I think paprika also sets it off? i'm not sure i feel like this just started in the past few months a progressive thing? i'm seeing mixed info online as to whether it gets worse over time, and i've seen how bad it gets for some people and i'm terrifiedįor me tho my diet consists of lots of vegetables, i eat mushrooms and cauliflower a lot as my staples and i'll eat the same thing for like 3 weeks straight because i'm too lazy to cook other stuff and then i start itching like week 4 so then i switch it up but idk i just don't know if i have it in me to cook different foods al the time. Crazy annoying and frustrating but I'm kind of used to it by now :( And the usual arsenal - antihistamines and creams, loose cotton clothes, etc if it bothers me too much. The only thing I do if I get a reaction of any kind is to stop eating what I'm suspecting caused it and wait it out until symptoms dissappear. For this reason i try to listen to my body and mix it up if possible. I do notice if I eat the same food all the time after some point it can become problematic too, its like it accumulates in the body and eventually the body is like "nope, ive had enough of this, too much, eat something else". It's mostly citrus fruits (but not all the time, sometimes ok) or vit C in different forms (natural or supplements) but impossible to predict IF or WHEN and from what fruit or food I will get a reaction. I'm not diagnosed, just suspecting mcas, and I do have full body itching without any symptoms too. It's not going to completely cure you, but it might at least reduce your benadryl/antihistamine use, and it's a lifesaver if you experience sinus congestion as well as itching. I use the neilmed sinugator but a regular neti pot should do the trick just as nicely. If you're not ready to change your diet (very understandable, it sucks and I struggle a lot with it), one thing I've found really helpful in reducing symptoms that is easy to implement: sinus rinses! I do one in the morning, one before bed, and more as needed when I eat something I shouldn't have (it's especially helpful for that awful roof of the mouth and nostril itching/burning). Unfortunately you will probably need to significantly change your diet, and I would try to go easy on the benadryl if you can because I don't think it's very good to take so much of it, even if it's relieving your symptoms (I'm weird though and benadryl actually seems to make my itching worse sometimes, so your mileage may vary). It's been happening to me for so long it doesn't really bother me except when I'm trying to sleep, when it becomes unbearable - I'm just about managing to drift off when suddenly I have an itch that just won't be ignored and I'm awake for another hour. I occasionally get hives too, but it's pretty rare and only happens a couple of times a year. I've been getting it since early childhood. I absolutely get this! I think it's actually my earliest HIT/MCAS symptom (I'm not officially diagnosed but I'm very sure it's what I have and I'm saving up for a functional medicine appointment to confirm). |
